Homework Strategies

Most students face challenges with homework at some point in their educational journey. How can parents help? Encouraging students to be independent is key. However, parents can also reinforce good habits when needed:

  • Provide ongoing, brief communication about assignments and priorities

  • Offer guidance on organizational strategies

  • Create a comfortable, well-lit, distraction-free homework environment

Consider the different ways students learn. Research demonstrates different types of information is processed in different parts of the brain. Learning can be approached from multiple perspectives, including visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. Parents can encourage students to try different approaches to homework. Some examples include:

Visual Strategies for Learning

Auditory Strategies for Learning

Kinesthetic Strategies for Learning

  • Taking notes

  • Using color codes

  • Visualizing information

  • Using/drawing pictures, charts, and graphs

  • Watch an informational video

  • Creating a map or a timeline

  • Listening to an audio book while reading it

  • Reading aloud

  • Repeating information out loud

  • Having a discussion with someone on a topic

  • Recording and playing back information

  • Playing cards or board games that incorporate math

  • Making cards to play trivia, bingo, or matching games to reinforce learning

  • Using dice or dominos to practice skills

  • Incorporating movement into learning

  • Role playing

  • Writing letters or words in the air or invisibly on any surface

Don't forget to check in with the teacher(s) to gain their insights and expertise on how to reinforce/support what is taught in the classroom.
